Choosing materials

Wood or composite?

Both make a great deck. Wood costs less up front and looks beautiful; composite costs more but skips the yearly staining. We'll bring samples to your design visit so you can see them in your own light.

Whatever goes on top, the framing underneath is pressure-treated lumber, built to code and flashed properly where it meets your house.

About us

Hi, I'm Cal.

I've been framing and finishing for twenty years, the last twelve building decks and porches around the Gorge. Ridgeback is me, my nephew Eli and a two-person crew.

We build like we're going to be sitting on it: proper footings, flashing where the deck meets the house, and hardware that won't rust out in five years.

Weekends you'll find me on the river or fixing something at my own place that I've been putting off.

FAQ

Questions about your new deck

Wood or composite: which is right for me?

If budget matters most and you don't mind staining every few years, wood is great. If you'd rather never stain again, composite is worth the extra cost. We'll show you both.

Do you pull permits?

Yes. Most decks over 30 inches high or attached to the house need a permit. We handle the drawings, application and inspections.

How long does a new deck take?

Design and permit usually take 2–4 weeks. The build itself is typically 1–3 weeks depending on size and weather.

Can you repair my deck instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the framing is sound, we can replace boards, railings or stairs. If the posts or ledger are rotting, we'll show you and explain the options.

Do you offer design drawings?

Every new build starts with a simple 3D drawing so you can see layout, stairs and railings before we cut a board.

When is the best time to book?

Late winter and early spring fill up fast for summer builds. Fall is a great time for repairs and refinishing.
