Businesses with no website listed on any source we’re allowed to use (1,693 of them) aren’t counted at all, and neither are sites we couldn’t check (a bot wall, for example). We don’t look businesses up on Google, Maps or Yelp. So the real share with no working website is probably higher, not lower.

What counts as “no working website”?

A business counts as having no working website when its latest check found one of these:

  • No site at all, confirmed by hand.
  • Facebook only: the only web presence is a Facebook page.
  • Directory only: only listings on directory sites, no site of its own.
  • Dead: the listed site doesn’t load, or its domain has expired.
  • Parked: the domain shows a parking or for-sale page.
  • Under construction: a placeholder page and nothing else.

A working site is one that loads and is the business’s own. Expired domains of businesses that have closed or moved still count as dead, which pushes the share up a little. Leaving out the unknowns pushes it down. The methodology explains both.

What does the website checklist measure?

Every working site gets the same 12 checks, each scored 0 (missing), 1 (partial) or 2 (pass). The weights add up to 100:

  • Mobile-friendly15
  • Click-to-call14
  • Speed (provisional)12
  • Booking or contact form12
  • HTTPS10
  • Services listed10
  • Reviews shown8
  • Freshness7
  • Google Business Profile link or map5
  • Business schema3
  • Title and description2
  • Name and phone match2

Speed is provisional. It comes from lab tests, and only a minority of sites have one so far (101 of the 4,704 working sites). The rest fall back to our own timing, which can only score “partial”. Treat speed as a rough signal. The full rules for each check are on the methodology page.

How did we check?

  • Sample source: businesses in the open Overture Maps Places dataset (release 2026-09-23.1) plus ones our team researched by hand from public pages. It’s the businesses visible in open map data, not a census of every business.
  • Where: the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Roswell, GA metro area (CBSA 12060), placed by each listing’s ZIP code.
  • Trades: 27 home-service trades, from appliance repair and HVAC to roofers and tree service. Barbers, photographers, tutors, pet and vehicle services are left out.
  • Scoring dates: sites checked on Oct 17, 2026. Numbers are frozen as of Oct 18, 2026, 5:10 PM ET.
  • Rubric: version 1.0.0. A rule change gets a new version, and old scores are kept.
  • Left out: national chains and franchises, businesses we couldn’t confirm from an allowed source, and businesses whose website we couldn’t determine.
  • Sample-size rules: we publish a figure only when it rests on at least 30 businesses, and we hide any count under 5 so no business can be singled out.
  • How: an automated checker that names itself, follows each site’s robots.txt, reads at most 2 public pages per site, and never fills in a form or contacts anyone.

Every detail, including the exact rules for each check, is on the methodology page.

What don’t these numbers claim?

  • They’re Atlanta-area numbers, not national ones. So far we’ve only checked the Atlanta metro. We’ll say so every time we publish them.
  • No per-trade figures yet. Trade-by-trade numbers aren’t part of this release. They’ll come only for trades with at least 30 businesses checked, after review.
  • No rankings or names. We never name, rank or single out a business. Everything here is a total across many businesses.
  • Not a human review. These are automated checks of a page’s code. A site can score well and still be hard to use, or the other way round.
  • Not Google’s view. The checklist is ours, published in full. It isn’t a Google rating, and we don’t use review stars or counts from any platform.

Can I use this data?

Yes. Download the aggregate figures as a CSV, free under CC BY 4.0. It holds totals only: no business names, IDs, addresses or contact details.

Download the CSV makeasite-atlanta-home-service-websites-2026-10.csv

CC BY asks for credit (see the attribution line below). It doesn’t require a link, and we never ask for one. Each row says what it covers, its as-of date and its sample size. The columns are listed on the methodology page.

How do you handle errors and updates?

Every figure is tied to one point in time (its as-of date), so it can be reproduced exactly from our records. If you find an error, email hello@makeasite.co and we’ll publish the correction with a date. Planned next: the Charlotte metro, around January 2027.

makeasite.co builds websites for trade businesses, so we have a stake in this topic. That’s why we publish the method and the data, not just the headline. See our free guides and free tools, or the trades we build for.
