What do Angi or Thumbtack leads really cost you per job?
A free calculator from makeasite.co, where we build websites for local trade pros. Enter what you pay per lead, how many you buy and how many you close. You'll see a year of lead fees, what each booked job really costs you, and how that compares with $290 a year for your own website.
A year of lead fees
about $3,310
a year on Thumbtack leads
- Each booked job costs you
- about $140
- At a 10% to 30% close rate
- $90 to $275
- Jobs from those leads
- 24 a year
- Lead cost per job, share of job value
- —
A year of your own makeasite.co website (Starter, $290/yr) costs about the same as 10.5 of those leads.
Compared with what a booked job costs you now, your site pays for itself if it brings in about 2.1 jobs a year.
Lead prices vary by trade, town and job size. Defaults are typical figures from the sources listed below, not quotes from Angi or Thumbtack. Your own invoices are the best number.
How the math works
Yearly spend is rounded to the nearest $10 and cost per job to the nearest $5. The close-rate range line reruns cost per booked job at 10% and 30%, the range contractors report in the Founders Resource analysis.
Thumbtack, handyman: 10 leads a month × 12 months = 120 paid leads. 120 × $27.57 + $0 fee = $3,308.40 a year. At a 20% close rate that's 24 jobs, so $137.85 per booked job. A year of Starter ($290) equals 10.5 of those leads, and break-even is 2.1 jobs a year (290 ÷ 137.85).
Angi, plumbing: 10 leads a month × 12 × $62.50 (midpoint of the reported $40–$85 range) + $300 reported annual fee = $7,800 a year. 24 jobs at 20%, so $325 per booked job. Break-even for Starter is 0.9 jobs a year.
The assumptions, said out loud
- Lead prices are typical figures, not quotes. Neither platform publishes a rate card. Thumbtack pros set their own lead prices, and Angi's help center says its fees change with the task, location and demand.
- 10 leads a month is a round starting number, not an average. Use your own.
- Refunds and credits aren't subtracted. Both platforms have refund or credit rules for some leads. If you get credits back, lower your price per lead to match.
- The website line is a comparison, not a promise. A website doesn't guarantee jobs. The break-even number only tells you how many jobs it would take to match what you pay per job now.
Where do the default prices come from?
Retrieved Oct 17, 2026. Thumbtack figures are category medians from Tack Tools Pro: vendor data from 5,985 priced leads in its customers' accounts, Mar 12 to Sep 18, 2026. Angi figures are ranges from Founders Resource, a third-party analysis of contractor-reported figures (updated Sep 9, 2026). We use the midpoint as the default. Both sources sell services to contractors. "Not listed" means we don't have a number, so the field stays blank.

Fees: Thumbtack says "There's no charge to join, no annual fees, and no membership fees" (Thumbtack). For Angi, contractors report an annual membership fee of around $300 (Founders Resource). Our own prices are on the pricing section of our homepage.
Do you pay for Thumbtack leads that don't hire you?
Often, yes: a lead is a customer reaching out, not a booked job. For Opportunities, where you reach out first, Thumbtack says "You only pay the price shown if the customer responds to you," and its refund policy says it will "automatically refund you if a customer doesn't reply to any pro they contacted within 72 hours." Both are quoted from Thumbtack's help center by Tack Tools Pro.
Are Angi leads shared?
They can be. Angi's help center says: "Each time a homeowner submits a project request, we will match them with no more than five pros," and "You are charged for leads whether or not you open or respond to them." With Opportunities, "You only pay the lead fee when both you and the homeowner show interest in connecting with each other" (Angi Help Center).
Speed matters on shared leads. Angi's own help center puts it plainly: "The faster you respond, the better your chance of winning the job." If you're on a job when leads come in, the missed-call calculator shows what slow callbacks can cost.
Should I quit Angi or Thumbtack?
You don't have to. If your cost per booked job is comfortably below what a job earns you, those leads are doing their job. Keep the ones that pay off, and add your own website so customers who search your name, or see your truck, can reach you directly with no lead fee in between. Should I quit Angi or Thumbtack?
Not because of a calculator. If your cost per booked job is well below what a job earns you, the leads are working. You can keep a lead platform and also have your own website, so people who already know your name can reach you directly. Run your real numbers from your last few invoices and decide from there.
