Angi vs Thumbtack: is either worth it for trade pros, and how do you leave?
· 5 min read
On this page
Either can be worth it if a booked job costs less than it earns you, so track spend ÷ booked jobs for 30 days. Thumbtack charges per lead with no membership fee. Angi sells leads, sometimes on a contract you cancel by phone. Before cutting back, build your Google profile, reviews and website, and run them side by side for 60 days.
Lead apps can fill a calendar fast, and they can also eat a month's margin. Whether Angi or Thumbtack is worth it comes down to one number you can work out yourself: what a booked job costs you on each app. This guide shows how the two charge (per their own pages as of October 2026), how to run that number, and how to cut back without your phone going quiet. For the wider question of lead apps (including HomeAdvisor and Yelp) vs a site you own, see lead apps vs your own website, or start with does my business need a website?
How do Angi and Thumbtack charge pros?
Thumbtack sells leads with no membership fee. Angi sells leads, and some pros are also on a subscription agreement with a term. The details depend on your plan, so read your own agreement, but here's what each company says publicly.
| Angi (Angi Leads) | Thumbtack | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | Leads and "Opportunities"; some pros have a subscription contract | Leads. Thumbtack says there are no subscription, annual or membership fees |
| Price control | Monthly lead budget (not available on every plan) | You set your own lead prices and a budget |
| Who picks whom | Depends on lead type | Thumbtack says the customer picks you, and it limits competition per job |
| Taking a break | Pause leads up to 2 weeks in the app or site (longer via support). Pausing doesn't pause a subscription contract | Lower or stop your budget in the app |
| Leaving | Call Customer Care, 877-947-3639, Mon to Fri, 8 AM to 8 PM ET | No contract to cancel. Turn off your budget |
| Reviews you collect | Stay on Angi | Stay on Thumbtack |
What does the public record say?
Two facts are worth knowing. They're not opinions.
- Angi's pro count is shrinking. In its Q2 2026 earnings release, Angi reported an average of 106,000 monthly active pros in the U.S., down 17% from 126,000 a year earlier, with average monthly churn of 6.0%.
- The FTC has acted on lead claims. In 2023 the FTC finalized an order against HomeAdvisor (an Angi company) over allegedly false or unsubstantiated claims about the quality and source of the leads it sold to service pros. The order required up to $7.2 million in redress and bars misleading claims about leads, including how often they turn into jobs.
Neither fact tells you whether the leads will work in your area. Your own numbers will.
How do you work out your real cost per booked job?
Divide everything you spent on the app in a month by the jobs you actually booked from it. Not leads, booked jobs. Do it for every source you use, with the same 30 days for each.
| Source | Spent (30 days) | Leads | Booked jobs | Revenue from them | Cost per booked job |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angi | $ | $ | $ (spent ÷ booked) | ||
| Thumbtack | $ | $ | $ | ||
| Google LSA | $ | $ | $ | ||
| Google profile / website (free) | $0 | $ | $0 | ||
| Referrals and repeat customers | $0 | $ | $0 |
A cleaner spends $600 on an app in a month, gets 20 leads and books 4. That's $150 per booked job. If an average first clean brings in $180, the app took most of the first visit. That's only worth it if those customers rebook. Same math for every source, then compare.
Want it done for you? The lead fee calculator runs this math for Angi or Thumbtack, with typical lead prices by trade filled in.
Ask every new caller "How did you find us?" and write it on the job. It's the only way to fill the bottom two rows honestly, and they're usually bigger than people think.
How do you leave without the phone going quiet?
Build your own lead flow first, run both side by side, then cut back on your numbers. A 60-day plan:
- Days 1 to 7: fix your Google Business Profile (category, services, areas, photos, hours). Read your Angi agreement for its term and any remaining commitment.
- Days 1 to 30: ask every customer, including the app ones, for a Google review (copy a review request text). Reviews on the apps stay on the apps.
- Days 7 to 14: get a real website live, with your services, area, photos and a phone number, and link it from your profile.
- Days 1 to 60: fill in the worksheet every week. Text past customers a "we have openings" note (only people you've worked for).
- Day 30: lower the app budget, or pause, on whichever source has the worst cost per booked job.
- Day 60: keep what pays, cut what doesn't. If you cancel Angi, call during their hours and note the date, the name of the person you spoke to, and any confirmation number.
What's better than shared leads?
Leads that are only yours. A complete Google profile and a steady stream of reviews cost nothing but time. Google's Local Services Ads bill per lead too, but only if you can answer fast, since missed calls can now be charged. Repeat customers and referrals cost the least of all, and a simple website is what makes them easy: a page people can forward, with your number on it. Whether you're a handyman, a cleaner or a mover, the safest plan mixes several of these and keeps whatever wins on cost per booked job, not on gut feel. The full comparison of every option is in lead apps vs your own website.
Questions trade pros ask
How do I cancel my Angi agreement?
Angi's help center says you cancel by calling Angi Customer Care at 877-947-3639, Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM Eastern. Before you call, check your agreement for the term and any remaining commitment.
Can I pause Angi leads instead of canceling?
Yes. Angi lets you pause leads for up to 2 weeks in the Angi for Pros app or on its website, and longer through support chat. Angi notes that pausing leads doesn't pause a subscription contract.
Does Thumbtack charge a monthly fee?
Thumbtack says there's no charge to join and no subscription, annual or membership fees. You pay for leads, you set your own lead prices, and a budget controls how many you get.
Will I lose my Angi or Thumbtack reviews if I leave?
Those reviews belong to that platform, so plan on them staying there. Start asking every customer for a Google review now, so you have your own before you cut back.
What should replace lead apps?
Sources you own or that bill you per real lead: a complete Google Business Profile, a steady flow of Google reviews, your own website, repeat customers and referrals, and, if you can answer fast, Local Services Ads.
How long does it take for Google to bring calls instead?
There's no honest fixed number. It depends on your trade, area, competition and reviews. That's why the plan below runs both side by side for 30 to 60 days and decides on your own numbers.
