Short answer

The best review request is a short, same-day text with the customer's name, the job, your name and your Google review link, and nothing about stars or rewards. Below are nine copy-paste versions: five texts, an email, a card line, and replies for good and bad reviews. Send one reminder at most.

Fill in your details below (or the [brackets] by hand) and send. Every template follows the same rules: one honest ask, no rewards, no mention of stars, and no picking only the happy customers (Google forbids all three). Get your link from your Business Profile under Read reviews → Get more reviews → Copy. The full how-to is in our guide to getting more Google reviews.

Fill in your details and every template below fills itself in. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Which review request texts work for trade jobs?

Short, personal ones sent the same day. Pick the one that sounds like you. A standard text holds 160 plain characters, and longer ones arrive in parts, which is fine. The count under each text tells you how many.

1. Same-day text (default)
Hi [First name], it's [Your name] from [Business]. Thanks for having us out to [job] today. If you have a minute, an honest Google review really helps a small business like ours: [review link]
Thanks again!

2. Text with a job photo
Hi [First name], here's the finished [deck / drain / kitchen] for your records (photo attached). Thanks for trusting us with it. If you'd like to share how it went, our Google review link is here: [review link]. [Your name], [Business]

3. Short version (for quick jobs)
Thanks, [First name]! If you have 30 seconds, an honest review helps us a lot: [review link]. [Your name], [Business]

4. Repeat or recurring customer
Hi [First name], [Your name] here. We've loved [cleaning for you / looking after your lawn] these past [months]. If you've never left us a Google review, we'd be grateful for an honest one: [review link]. See you [next visit]!

5. One reminder (3 to 5 days later, then stop)
Hi [First name], [Your name] from [Business] again. No pressure, but if you get a second this week, here's that review link: [review link]. And if anything about the job isn't right, reply here and I'll sort it out.

Watch out

Text only customers who gave you their number for the job, send from your business number, and stop if anyone asks you to. This isn't legal advice. If you use a texting app, follow its consent settings.

What about email and a leave-behind card?

Use email for customers who booked by email, and a card or invoice line for everyone else.

6. Email
Subject: Thanks from [Business]

Hi [First name],

Thanks for choosing [Business] for [job] on [day]. It was good to meet you.

If you have a minute, an honest Google review helps other people in [area] find a [trade] they can trust:
[review link]

If anything isn't right, just reply to this email and I'll take care of it.

[Your name]
[Business] · [business phone]
7. Leave-behind card or invoice footer
Thanks for choosing [Business].

How should you reply when the review comes in?

Reply within a few days. Keep it short and mention a detail of the job.

8. Reply to a positive review
Thanks, [Name]! Glad the [job detail] came out the way you wanted. We'll be here when [the next thing] comes up. [Your name]
9. Reply to a negative review
Hi [Name], thanks for telling us. I'm sorry the [job] didn't go the way you expected. [One honest sentence: what happened, or what we're changing.] I'd like to make it right. Please call or text me at [business phone]. [Your name], owner

What should you never put in a review request?

  • "5 stars" or any rating you'd like
  • A discount, gift card, raffle or "free gutter clean for a review"
  • "Mention [employee] by name"
  • A "were you happy?" question that only sends the link to the yeses
  • A request for a Yelp review (Yelp asks businesses not to)

Questions trade pros ask

What is the best text message to ask for a review?

A short, personal one sent the same day: the customer's first name, the job you did, your name, your Google review link, and no mention of stars or rewards.

How many times should I ask a customer for a review?

Ask once in person, send one text, and at most one reminder a few days later. Then stop.

Can I add a discount to the review request?

No. Google prohibits incentives for reviews, and the FTC rule bans rewards tied to positive or negative reviews.
